Liberatore's sophomore solo guitar album, Gran Sasso, is named after an imposing mountain of the same name near his hometown of Raiano, Italy. The record maintains the focus and atmospheric economy that have established Liberatore as a unique voice in the world of free music. By foregoing the preparations that marked his debut album Solos, it signifies a clear sonic departure that aims to tie together the concept of composition-through-improvisation and electronic music. The material is constantly shifting and morphing in a state of underlying abstraction, thanks in part to the extensive use of the volume pedal, which eliminates the guitar attack and transforms it into an almost otherworldly instrument. Eschewing the common practice of grounding music in motivic melodies or tonal and formal centers, Liberatore instead relies on pace, intention, atmosphere, and immediacy to bring the piece together. Like its namesake, Gran Sasso is a product of indiscriminate conditions, moving at its own pace and will, apparently still but in constant motion.
